Google News is a great place to start your day.
SIDENOTE: If you don't have delicious already, learn about it now.
If you are looking for top stories fast, Google News can be a good place to start. There are many news sites online that do individual reporting for their site/publishing, but Google News indexes stories from some of the top publishers such as CNN, USA Today, BBC, Washington Post, and many other top news sources. Not only does Google News automatically compile news from all of these sources, this also aids in offering a wide range of opinions. There are multiple categories to view news from, that all define different industries.
A couple of my favorite features include:
- Edit this page: This option allows users to arrange the order of the news industry panels - making for a customizable homepage interface.
- The list of top trending news article keywords. Some of the latest trending keywords included: Tiger Woods and Zhu Pet.
- The option to search by area, to check local news - which also includes the local weather and local images.
- You have a wide variety of advanced search options allowing for targeted news searches, with high chances of high relevance.
The advanced options include:
- Date Range selection.
- Find results:
- with all of the words
- with the exact phrase
- with at least one of the words
- without the words

A new addition to Google News was their option to search the News Archive Search, an option that:
|provides an easy way to search and explore historical archives. In addition to helping you search, News archive search can automatically create timelines that show selected results from relevant time periods. (from GAS|
This will plot a timeline of each of the events related to the query. This is pretty cool, because it helps us to, for example, piece together an athletes rise to fame, or a musicians historic tour. By searching Googles Deep Web, this engine provides news older than what the regular Google news is able to provide.
Google News is perfect for someone looking to jumpstart their day with a healthy boost of diverse news. Although Google does not do any of their own reporting their automatic compiling of news makes experience a good one. As well if you are new to finding RSS sources, you will be able to find a good number of news sites that offer RSS feeds. Have fun with Google News!
