22 People Search exercises

What we're going to do today is figure out the relative performance of different people search engines for different tasks. You're only going to send six tweets as you go through this exercise.

  1. General people search.
    • Try out each of the "General people search" sites. Look for two people (maybe one parent and one friend) and see if the appropriate information appears.
    • After looking at all these sites, send a tweet about your favorite and least favorite sites (two tweets total): #bit330 #people: general: siteName: yourComment
  2. White page directories.
    • Try out each of the "White page directories". These sites are good for phone-number related information.
    • Again, try to look for a couple of people and see if the appropriate information appears.
    • Look for phone number by name:
      • Try each of the sites, looking for two people's phone number by name.
      • After looking at all these sites, send a tweet about your favorite site: #bit330 #people: byname: siteName: yourComment
    • Reverse phone number lookup (i.e., looking for information about a person given the phone number):
      • Try each of the sites, looking for two people's names by their phone number.
      • After looking at all these sites, send a tweet about your favorite site: #bit330 #people: reverse: siteName: yourComment
  3. Social site search
    • Now you're going to try out each of the "Social site search" sites. Guess what? Look for two people and see if the appropriate information appears.
    • After looking at all these sites, send a tweet about your favorite and least favorite sites (two tweets total): #bit330 #people: social: siteName: yourComment
  4. Use the Criminal Searches site to look for information about your neighborhood, either here in Ann Arbor or back home.
  5. Look through the specialized tools to see how they work.
